The theme for this EP revealed itself to me at the last minute as Rare Quiet Day. Those moments and hours when there are no power tools or construction in the sound field, or when you are hunkered in from the weather and no one is asking you for your time or attention thus allowing one to sink into and follow one’s own true flow; sourced from a certain flavor of stillness which helps one to hear the shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh that wishes to arise from the cacophony of daily life. These sound sculptures, three of which were done in October, are recorded without premeditation and come from listening into the sounds and notes that want to played, just now, for no reason, in a very improvisatory manner. After a great deal of sculpting and shaping of the tones, the final result is calming to my being beyond words. I hope they can do the same for you. Like an exhale that never ends, sustaining and never resolving.

A brief history and links to my older projects on Youtube and Bandcamp;

Deeply in love with music and starting early on with oboe, at 17, I began studying jazz and classical piano and soon joined an award-winning big band. In 1980 I was adding a Yamaha CS-01 monophonic Breath Controller synth plus a Boss digital delay and electric piano and played with reggae and funk bands on the Southside of Chicago and Dallas. I then began morphing into a rock vocalist writing many songs, sometimes on guitar and always tending toward a fusion of improvisation with a pop sensibility. Not so comfortable with the limelight and embracing my love of percussion, I began performing in some world/ambient ensembles ( youtu.be/jzrDfQ3inRw?t=2425 and youtu.be/jzrDfQ3inRw?t=1067 ) . In 2005, inspired by all styles of ecstatic dance music, I set out to learn Ableton Live sequencing and developed a live-looping dub-inspired controller setup ( youtu.be/WJJ68OZ2ngc?t=224 ) elevating the ambient improvs with electronic beats. My dance beats on Soundcloud and Myspace have been recently removed as to wipe clean from the past; in 2014 I had to stop all music making and exposure to normal daily sounds due to the onset of hyperacusis (an extreme hypersensitivity to most sounds where everything feels 20x louder!!). By grace, as Hipnotic Earth, I was able to start playing and recording again at super-low volumes with soft ambient sounds and colors. Surprisingly, this constrictive set of parameters helped me to actually focus my creativity and I was soon completing and releasing albums after a lifetime of fubbing about! I am very grateful to be playing music at all and am viscerally and deeply aware how these ambient sounds save my sanity and my peace of mind. I hope these sounds help you, too! - Cosmos
